Sky News host Chris Kenny says Energy Minister Chris Bowen ruling out nuclear power as a form of energy Australia can use “flies in the face of what’s happening in the rest of the world”.
“Where does Chris Bowen think Australia’s uranium exports go – they don’t go into weapons, that’s for sure, they provide reliable affordable electricity in places like France, the US, Japan, Taiwan and India,” he said.
Mr Kenny also said the “only reason” nuclear energy was found to be uneconomical was due to “national electricity market rules” – which heavily favour renewable. “There are distinct cost advantages for nuclear, for starters the plants last at least 60 years, perhaps a hundred, compared to 15 or 20 for solar panels or wind turbines, so you can discount their cost by a factor of at least three,” he said.
“And they can be placed where at existing generator sites so that billions don’t need to be spent on new transmission lines.Read More
