We chat with MrsDavis star Chris Diamantopoulos about the events of the wacky peacock series thus far, where his character JQ's Australian accent came from, and his take on the great AI debate in and out of universe:
Peacock's latest hit series is Mrs. Davis, an ambitious and genre-blending project from Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez . Emmy nominee Betty Gilpin plays Sister Simone, a nun determined to shut down an omnipresent artificial intelligence by finding the Holy Grail with her ex-boyfriend Wiley . The show quickly makes it clear that the rabbit hole goes far deeper than the initial storyline suggests, and with 5 episodes already having aired, viewers have as many questions as they do answers.
I do a lot of different accents and certainly have played within that realm before, both on screen and in animation. Then Damon just randomly said, "What about Australian?" Pick a harder one, why don't you? I've never done Australian. It's a mystical accent; I don't get it. And he was like, "Let's do it. Let's try it." I'm thinking of an epic, cinematic, Russell Crowe Australian. Like, he grew up next to the Hemsworth farm.
The way that he sees it is that, with the ubiquity of Mrs. Davis and her knowledge and presence giving a totalitarian amount of knowledge to everyone around, what JQ was able to do became obsolete. He lost his identity because Mrs. Davis gave the world access to all of the secrets and skills that he had cultivated over time. She demystified everything and instantly brought everything to light. And that's what he's fighting against.
Typically what can happen is that, first, it's misused or overused. Then we figure out how to use it as another color in the palette. I think that as long as there are human beings living on Earth, we're still going to want human stories or stories told by humans. That doesn't mean that we won't use technology to enhance the ability to tell those stories or weave those tales, but I'm not particularly concerned with that.
The character of JQ isn't only fiercely loyal to Wiley, but he's kind of taken ownership. Wiley's his, so back off, nun! Step off, because he's our boy. There's a little bit of that, but then there's also a little sense that if Wiley sees value in Simone, then she can be the one woman that's allowed in.
The other question would be where JQ's relationship with Wiley and Simone lands at the end of this, based on whether or not Mrs. Davis is defeated or not. There's really so many different places that JQ can go. And because there's so much artifice, and he built himself into this literal character, it would be really interesting to strip away some of that and maybe go into the real him.
