A South Australian Christian Brother who allegedly subjected students to extreme violence and corporal punishment in the late 1960s is standing trial for sexually abusing one of his"favourite students".The accused also worked at Blackfriars Priory School and Sacred Heart College during his careerJoseph William Weygood, 77, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of indecent assault.

"At that time, the accused was going by the name 'Brother Cyril' but that was changed shortly thereafter to 'Brother Joseph'," she said. "On the prosecution case, the accused was someone who sat at the extreme end of the spectrum in terms of his use of corporal punishment — he used it a lot.She described their relationship to the court as"complicated".

"Your Honour, that first act is an uncharged act — but on the prosecution case, it does go some way to explain and put into context what then evolved between the accused and [alleged victim]," she said.
