Senior is in school’s top three in every event but 500 free; seeks CIF individual title
You usually see it when an individual competes in an event like the individual medley. Phelps was the world’s best in the 400-meter IM, but he clearly was dominant in every stroke but the breaststroke. Not bad, mind you, better than 99 percent of the world, but not his strength.He has his best strokes — the freestyle and butterfly — but he’s in the top three on the Patriots’ record board in every stroke but one — the 500 freestyle.
The Patriots compete in their home pool, which is 25 meters long. Every other high school pool in the county is 25 yards, so every time Colombo competes in a home meet, his times have to be converted from meters to yards. Naturally, he’s expecting to nab the school 200 individual medley record of 1:54.04 before he’s finished, having gone 1:55.70.
“We go where help is needed,” said Colombo. “It’s as much fun as swimming. Helping people is pure joy. It goes back to the philosophy that giving is better than receiving.”
