The 75-year-old man who went on hunger strike for climate change ended his 38-day fast on Christmas afternoon before going to hospital to start a strict recuperation program.
Nationals Party MP Danny O'Brien, who represents Mr McKay's local electorate in Gippsland, was the only major party politician to state his position.The retired English teacher originally expected to "prod" 12 politicians into action within days. "So I can understand why they’re kind of hiding behind their desks. They’re caught in a no-win situation."
Another climate protester, Daniel Bleakley , in front of Parliament on day eight of his 10-day hunger strike in November.After weeks of intense dizziness and weakness, Mr McKay was only able end his strike with a spoonful of mashed banana.Mr McKay checked into hospital on Christmas evening, where he will remain for at least four days. He woke up extremely hungry early on Boxing Day and was given soup and crackers.
"The thing is, I’m fat. I’m still a little bit fat, but I was quite overweight when I started," he said.
