The 75-year-old man who went on hunger strike for climate change ended his 38-day fast on Christmas afternoon before going to hospital to start a strict recuperation program.

Nationals Party MP Danny O'Brien, who represents Mr McKay's local electorate in Gippsland, was the only major party politician to state his position.The retired English teacher originally expected to "prod" 12 politicians into action within days. He woke up extremely hungry early on Boxing Day and was given soup and crackers.

"The thing is, I’m fat. I’m still a little bit fat, but I was quite overweight when I started," he said.
