A writer, new to the traditions of Christmas and Bridget's family, prepares a saag aloo curry for the festive meal. The writer's cultural heritage and the family's open hearts create a heartwarming and unexpected moment of joy.
Bridget’s parents liked Indian food, so long as it wasn’t too spicy, and invited me to cook a festive dish. Tears soon began streaming down their faceswith her family. This was uncharted territory for me: past relationships had either not lasted long enough or had been with people whose families did not celebrate Christmas .
Although I had been warned that a pinch of paprika was about as spicy as Bridget’s parents got, my greatest cooking fear is the thought of making a curry that is bland. “That smells so good,” said her mother. I took this as permission to add another chilli.
