A temporary roadblock was opened on Christmas Eve, allowing residents of the Grampians region, ravaged by a 41,000-hectare bushfire, to access their properties. The Country Fire Authority (CFA) implemented 'Operation Yuletide' to provide some festive normality for locals, allowing them to retrieve Christmas essentials. Cooler weather helped firefighters gain some containment of the fire, but warnings persist for holiday travelers as bushfire risks across several states are growing. Intensifying conditions on Boxing Day with high temperatures and strong winds are expected to pose significant challenges for fire containment.
A police roadblock at the junction between Grampians Road and Ararat-Halls Gap Road was to be opened between 10am and noon on Christmas Eve
“ to ensure if the residents of Halls Gap will be relocated for Christmas, at least they will have what they need.” Conditions were set to intensify across the state when temperatures reached into 40C on Boxing Day, fanned by strong and dry winds, according to the Victorian emergency management commissioner, Rick Nugent.
