One of Australia's capital cities could be in for its hottest Christmas Day in more than half a century, with temperatures expected to rise well into the 30's and possibly into the 40's.
Sydney is looking warm and mostly sunny with a lingering chance of a shower, but it's merely a chance around lunch time with most of Sydney's suburbs set to miss out on the patchy wet weather.
Sky News Australia meteorologist Rob Sharpe says those that do get a shower on Christmas Day should only last for a short period of time and shouldn't be heavy.Canberra is predicted to see similar weather to Sydney and Melbourne - warm and mostly sunny with a high of between 27 and 30C.Darwin Darwin has its usual chance of a shower or storm as the 'build-up' continues. There's a good chance that much of the day will be dry, but uncomfortably humid with a high of 34C.
"A ridge of high pressure should extend east to west across southern Australia, leading to the relatively mild and settled conditions," BOM Meteorologist Jackson Browne said. "Tropical moisture will move in from Indonesia and the Coral Sea, which will then build over northern Australia, increasing shower and storm activity."Brisbane and much of southeast Queensland is likely to see a few showers, most likely in the morning and early afternoon, so it's a good idea to have a wet weather option for Christmas lunch.
