Homestead’s Evan Gardner (800), Palo Alto’s Kinga Czajkowska (1,600), Los Gatos’ boys 4×400 relay team post No. 1 times in prelims.

It was quite an opening act for Bay Area athletes at the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships.

In the boys 800, Gardner broke a personal record by more than two seconds to qualify first with a time of 1:52.47, nearly a second faster than Hughson’s Joseph Lighthall, who had the second-best time in 1:53.45. Gardner’s previous PR was 1:54.71, which he set at the Central Coast Section finals. De La Salle’s Chukwunonso Udeh, who won three individual events at last week’s North Coast Section Meet of Champions, had himself another big day.

They’re probably going to have to run faster to finish atop the medal stand on Saturday. Granada Hills ran 40.49 in the prelims.
