City of Ryde elects young Liberal mayor as seats shift on Sydney councils | MeganGorrey

Liberal councillor Jordan Lane has become the mayor of the City of Ryde, signalling a potential cooling of tensions between the council and the Coalition state government over plans for more intensive development.

The Liberals won six spots on the 12-member council, which had taken a swing to the left in 2017 when four Liberal councillors were elected. Labor won five seats in last month’s poll, and one independent was elected. It wasn’t about being “anti-development, or pro-development”, he said, but rather about “sensible, smart and efficient” decision-making.

On election day, 76 per cent of Ryde ratepayers supported the right to elect their mayor at the next poll, increasing the number of councillors to 13.Independent councillor Zoe Baker was elected as mayor on Monday. She beat rival and fellow nominee Ian Mutton, and ended Liberal-aligned independent Jilly Gibson’s 10-year stint.
