Indian court sentences Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for the brutal rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata hospital.
An Indian court sentenced civic police volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment after convicting him of raping and murdering a female doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The 31-year-old victim, a trainee doctor, was attacked while sleeping on duty in August 2024. Roy was found guilty of rape, rape causing death, and murder on Saturday.
On Monday, Kolkata's Sealdah Court handed down the life sentence, stating that while the crime was horrific, it did not meet the threshold of being a 'rarest-of-rare' case, which would have warranted the death penalty. The Central Bureau of Investigation had demanded capital punishment, but Judge Anirban Das concluded that all the evidence and circumstances pointed to a life imprisonment sentence. The parents of the victim were present at the court, alongside a heavy police presence. They had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation, alleging that more individuals were involved in the crime and demanding justice for the 'larger conspiracy'. Their lawyer, Amartya Dey, reiterated their plea for the death penalty and called for the prosecution of those complicit in the murder. The case sparked widespread outrage across India, with thousands protesting for justice for the victim in the weeks following the tragedy
