The Tennessee Three’s saga has awakened a new civil rights movement in Nashville and for the nation.
Tennesse state Rep. Justin Jones, D-Nashville, raises his fist on the floor of the House chamber after being expelled from the Legislature for protesting in support of gun safety measures.Because of the city of Nashville’s commitment to higher education, its nickname is the “Athens of the South” in homage to that ancient Greek city’s reputation as the world’s center of learning.
On March 30, Johnson and the two Justins had the audacity to join gun reform proponents on the House floor to advocate for change after six people, including three 9-year-old children, were murdered in a Nashviile school three days earlier. The three lawmakers did break House rules by taking to the floor without being recognized and using bullhorns.
Students such as Lewis, Nash, Bernard Lafayette and James Bevel were leaders in the Nashville Student Movement. They’d begun learning about nonviolence through workshops taught by Rev. James Lawson, whom Martin Luther King Jr. called, “the leading theorist and strategy of nonviolence in the world.” In May of 1961, the Congress of Racial Equality launched Freedom Rides, integrated bus rides that challenged segregated bus terminals. When racists in Alabama fire-bombed and beat passengers on the first two bus rides, the Freedom Rides were going to stop until Nash, Lewis and other students from Nashville risked their lives by continuing the rides through the summer.
