Tyson Jost returns to Colorado as an opposing player for the first time. He has carved out a defense-first role with the Buffalo Sabres. by BennettDurando

Tyson Jost was catching up with a group of former Avalanche teammates for dinner Wednesday night when the conversation turned to young defensemen. Specifically, how Jost has had the good fortune of playing alongside two of the world’s best early in his career.

As an Avalanche forward for parts of six seasons, Jost witnessed the arrival of Cale Makar. Now since being claimed off waivers by the Sabres, he has a front row seat to the emergent talent of Rasmus Dahlin. “ and I were talking about that at dinner last night,” Jost said Thursday before his first regular-season game at Ball Arena as an opposing player. “Dahlin, I don’t think he even gets enough credit for how good he is. He’s incredible. Just so smooth with the puck. His skill is just outstanding. Him and Cale are kind of different players. Dahlin’s a little bit, I guess more poised with the puck and stuff like that. Cale will kind of beat you with his speed and explosiveness.

Playing with a young, elite blueliner is just one of the familiarities Jost has noticed in his new home. His Colorado homecoming is his 12th game with Buffalo after playing the first 12 games this season with Minnesota. The Wild placed him on waivers after a shaky start, but Jost has been an effective bottom-six forward for the Sabres.

“Reminds me of when I first came to Colorado,” Jost said. “We’re an up-and-coming team and we’re young, so it sort of has that same feel of when I was first here in Colorado. The one nice thing is just the guys. Everyone is right around my age because we’re a young team, so it’s fun coming to the locker room every day. Everyone wants to get better.”Related Articles
