The Coalition is demanding Prime Minister Anthony Albanese provide answers about the immigration 'mess' created by thousands of Palestinians fleeing the war in Gaza, with new figures showing as many as 750 have applied for asylum after being granted temporary tourist visas in Australia.
The federal opposition has renewed its criticism of the Albanese government's approach to granting visas for Palestinians fleeing the conflict in Gaza , demanding to know whether"proper" security checks are in place to prevent Hamas supporters entering the country.
Mr Tehan cited comments from Australian Security Intelligence Organisation head Mike Burgess, who in an interview last month appeared to suggest"rhetorical support" for Hamas would not rule applicants ineligible, to claim the Albanese government was putting community safety at risk by allowing about 1,300 Palestinians to enter the country.
Speaking to Sky News Australia, Mr Tehan welcomed the ASIO boss' clarification, but insisted it was now up to the Prime Minister to provide his own reassurance about the security checks being carried out on Palestinian asylum seekers.
