Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno declares a state of emergency as clashes between protesters and police flare up over hike in fuel prices
A demonstrator clashes with riot police during a transport strike against the economic policies of the government of Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno regarding the agreement signed on March with the International Monetary Fund in Quito on October 3, 2019.
Moreno told reporters he had taken the measure "to safeguard the security of citizens and to avoid chaos." Interior Minister Maria Paula Romo said 19 people have been arrested. No figures were available for the number of people injured but some press photographers were hurt during the clashes. Moreno blames the deterioration in Ecuador's finances on his predecessor, Rafael Correa, who has sought asylum in Belgium.
The emergency measure allows the government to restrict movement, to employ the armed forces to maintain order and to censor the press.
