Class sizes at the University of NSW have ballooned during the pandemic, with one maths tutorial jumping from an average of 28 students to more than 165 | natassiazc

"While students are online, they're already one step removed from the education they want to receive," she said. "I’ve heard many examples of students in huge tutorials at the moment, where their teachers have barely any time to allow real discussion in their classes."One first-year maths course has been taught online to three tutorial groups of 170, 169 and 168 students.

The average tutorial at UNSW now hosts about 27 students, according to the analysis. This is compared to a previous average of 24 students per tutorial, which had remained consistent since 2016. She said it was likely the situation would change again in future given the expectation of reduced international student enrolments, and said UNSW's new academic and student life division would aim to support students.
