The first Zeekr, a small SUV, will be sold from October, and will be followed by as many as 10 other brands from China’s vast portfolio of carmakers.
Already a subscriber? It’s called the Zeekr, a name uncomfortably close to that of a mosquito-borne virus. But on paper it is another very impressive electric offering from Geely Holding, a Chinese company that is fast becoming the Volkswagen Group of the east.
The new brands should also bring new tech. China builds about 60 per cent of the world’s BEVs and is constantly innovating. Zeekr recently announced new ultra-fast charging technology it claims will charge a car from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 10.5 minutes. In May, Volvo global CEO Jim Rowan said he was confident his brand would meet its promise of being all-EV by 2030. By late July he was telling a quarterly investor webcast that some Volvo buyers were not ready to move to full electrification that quickly.
The story appeared under the headline “The EV haters have a point” and the writer concluded he was more likely to buy a PHEV than a BEV. “BEVs deliver emissions reduction at the tailpipe across the entire vehicle lifetime for representative sedans and SUVs sold in the United States,” it says.
