CEO Mark Schubert says it will make a large compost pit in western Sydney into a giant indoor hall as it goes greener.

, plans to shift the compost operations of newly-acquired western Sydney group GRL into an indoor hall to stop the smell, as it positions for a shift to a four-bin household model in NSW by 2030.

Cleanaway chief executive Mark Schubert said the company will spend between $40 million to $45 million on transitioning the composting area into an indoor facility by 2025 to 2026 to make it odourless. The GRL acquisition comes ahead of major policy shifts by the NSW Government which will result in households by 2030 having a separate bin for food and garden waste, taking the number of household bins to four. Cleanaway already has the exclusive rights to send waste to the GRL facility and Mr Schubert said government policy changes will require new composting infrastructure when that system comes in.
