Exclusive: A major road tunnel in the Blue Mountains won’t attract a toll - but the Northern Beaches’ road to the city will. And for federal Liberal MP Jason Falinski, that’s a problem | Rabe9
A federal Liberal MP has taken aim at the NSW government’s decision not to toll a major road tunnel through the Blue Mountains, saying a clear double standard exists between the city and regions.
Falinski said traffic congestion, alongside home ownership, was a major issue in his Northern Beaches electorate, which he is fighting to retain from teal independent Dr Sophie Scamps.connecting the Warringah Freeway at Cammeray to Balgowlah and Seaforth has been promised by the Perrottet government, but its timing is set to be delayed, and motorists will pay to use it.
“The tunnel will reduce congestion and improve safety for local residents, tourists and freight operators.”The NSW government has already indicated it wants Commonwealth funding for the Blue Mountains tunnel. The highway also includes a duplication between Katoomba to Blackheath, with early works starting in 2023.
“I think it’s really important that we connect regions and major urban centres a lot better … where is the greatest productivity uplift that you can get in terms of investment in road transport? The Northern Beaches sticks out like a sore thumb every time,” he said.
