Councilwoman Rebecca Maurer, one of City Council’s two LGBTQ+ members, said the city’s move was an important one, given escalating attacks on transgender people.
City officials and LGBTQ+advocates held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting Thursday for City Hall's first-ever gender-inclusive restroom.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland City Hall’s first gender-inclusive restroom opened to the public on Thursday morning.
“I often get frustrated that we’re even talking about bathrooms when it comes to discussing transgender identity because it is so much more than that, culturally, vibrantly, and with regards to being visible. But inclusive restroom spaces are a small, structurally-important change [that shows] the city is making an effort,” said Amanda Cole, executive director of Plexus LGBT and Allied Chamber of Commerce.
The new restroom at City Hall is ADA-accessible. It includes two sinks, and two stalls with floor-to-ceiling walls, along with a sign outside that reads “all gender restroom.”that the city hopes to open more gender-inclusive bathrooms at other public buildings in the future.
