The consultant's catch phrase 'outlived its useful life' kept coming back.
Updated: Oct. 17, 2023, 1:08 p.m.At the podium in Cleveland Heights City Council Chambers Oct. 16, Zoe Baldwin speaks about keeping Cumberland Pool open over the summer season, as her brother and sister look on in the foreground. All three Roxboro Middle School students got to speak early in the public comment lineup because it was a weeknight.
Although public comment for items not on the agenda generally comes later in the meeting, Council President Melody Joy Hart noted that several youngsters in the crowd had school the next day, so they were allowed to speak early. “Also, the people there are kind and fun,” Genevieve added, noting that Cumberland has changed her life by providing a place to learn to “swim and dive and so much more. Imagine being stuck at home with nothing to do in 80- to 90-degree heat.”
Seren soon gave his first “reassurance to all the kids today, that at least the city administration has absolutely no intention whatsoever of closing Cumberland pool. “I love the pool’s footprint,” Hall said. “We don’t need a slide. But what we need is our pool to be fixed, enhanced and ready for next year.”
“It is my intention to push as hard as we possibly can to minimize any interruption of the swim season.” While the baby pool was broken at the end of the 2022 season, Ford said, “We were also surprised that not only was it not fixed, there were no plans to open it at all in 2023.”“But just because it’s in disrepair doesn’t mean it’s outlived its useful life,” Ford added.
