The Cleveland Orchestra showed its excellence as the 2023 Blossom Music Festival began.
CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio – The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2023 Blossom Music Festival started not with a bang but rather the musical equivalent of a big warm hug.
Thoughtful isn’t necessarily the first word that comes to mind in relation to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, the program’s centerpiece and main attraction. Certainly, Malkki and the orchestra, along with the Blossom Festival Chorus, turned in nothing like a tame or restrained performance. The all-too-brief work radiated tenderness, exemplifying the depth, complexity, and intensity of maternal love. The music roved through various imagined scenes, but Malkki guaranteed that Still’s and Johnson’s visions unfolded as a single continuous arc.
The same forces and others conspired in a similar manner in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Director of Choruses Lisa Wong got the voices – which included the resonant trio of mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong, tenor Issachah Savage, and bass Soloman Howard – in excellent shape, but it was Malkki who prepared the orchestra and combined the ensembles in a crisp, organic, and well-paced performance that rightly brought the crowd to its feet.
