Launched in 2018, the program is designed to allow children from the city’s most violent and impoverished neighborhoods to explore the difficult feelings stemming from traumatic situations in their lives, using theater games, skits and monologues.
. It will also be offered in a limited number of schools in Las Vegas, the second-largest school district in the country, where the student population of each school is between 900 – 1,200 students.
“From day one, the plan has always been to eventually take this program to schools nationally,” said Kazmierczak. “There is a tremendous need for the arts to be returned to the classroom everywhere in our country. In Ohio, only one percent of the state’s students have access to the arts in their schools.”
“While we have had a tremendous response from the communities, we are doing what we consider ‘a manageable launch’ in these new cities,” said Kazmierczak. “We want it to be a 5-star premier so everyone can see the value in what we are teaching – helping children to recognize what it is they are feeling and understand that it is okay to feel that way. It may not be the whirlwind we had hoped for, but at this point in time, it’s what is best. And we are already planning for what comes next.
“There is a lot of pent-up frustration kids are trying to deal with,” he said. “These last few years have been an emotional mix for everyone. Theater has always been a vehicle for expressing emotion – when kids can create a character, they think about what that character is feeling and how those emotions are impacting the way that character reacts in situations.
