Leona “Lee” Mackey died on Sept. 30 at the age of 98.

The Slavic Village native is remembered as a Cleveland theater legend who along with her husband of 57 years, Beck Center for the Arts Managing Director Karl Mackey, played a pivotal role in the creation of the Lakewood theater company.

Born to Polish immigrants, Mackey, a South High School graduate, first started acting at the age of 5. “The fact that she met my dad who was a directing and theater major, it was a match made in heaven. They complimented each other so well.” “Another one would be when they opened the Beck Center with ‘Mary of Scotland.’ Mom played Queen Elizabeth. And then performing with my father, they did ‘Gin Game’ and ‘Love Letters’ together at Beck. Those were very special because they didn’t typically appear onstage together. He was usually directing, she was usually acting.”
