A Tasmanian independent MP who received more than $72,000 in donations from Climate 200 says he will divest his shares in a fossil fuel company, miner and pokies venue operator, as they do not align with his values.
Independent Tasmanian MP Peter George says he will divest his shares in Origin Energy and pokies venue operator Endeavour Group, as well as interests in miner Rio Tinto, after they were publicly disclosed in his parliamentary returns.

The returns show Mr George owns shares in Origin Energy — which uses coal and gas to produce energy — as well as Endeavour Group, which has six pokies venues in Tasmania.Mr George said he inherited the shares from his mother who died over three years ago, but he had not fully looked into it until this year. He said the matter had been raised with him several times since he publicly disclosed his shareholdings in August, and that he will be divesting his shares in Origin Energy and Endeavour Group, and his interests in Rio Tinto."I'm really quite pleased it's been raised. It's better than having it sit there for years.Mr George, a former journalist, producer and foreign correspondent with the ABC, said he had "spent my life as a reporter".Endeavour shares were issued to Woolworths shareholders as a result of the companies' demerger. Mr George did not disclose the number of shares he owns, describing it as personal financial information. Mr George said if Climate 200 "look at the fact I have shares in Origin Energy, they are going to raise their eyebrows, but I don't have to answer to them".Climate 200 declared it received $36,000 in donations as a third-party campaigner in Tasmania.Candidates chosen by "community groups" receive financial support from Climate 200 if they have a "viable pathway to success" and a science-based response to the climate crisis.
