MPs said the key take-out from the research was that “the Liberal Party just isn’t seen as a modern party in representing the values and concerns of people under 50”.
The Liberal Party’s tin ear towards climate change and other progressive issues has resulted in its base dwindling to voters with assets and those aged over 50, according to research that was presented to federal Opposition MPs this week.the research concludes its attitude towards climate change not only contributed to its poor showing in key demographics at the May 21 election, but was symbolic of a deeper “values disconnect” with voters.
It had lost its traditional base, driven by multiple factors including a perceived lack of leadership during COVID-19 and a middle Australia that was increasingly socially progressive and economically anxious. NSW moderate Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg, who instigated the Senate committee, said although his options were open, he did not intend to cross the floor.
It remains unhappy with a so-called ratchet mechanism designed to ensure the 43 per cent target is a floor not a ceiling, and the refusal by the government to entertain a ban on new coal and gas developments.
