A landmark climate report warns global warming will hit 1.5 degrees Celsius between 2030 and 2035 – a decade earlier than previously projected.
In its first major update since 2013 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change forecasts temperatures to increase more than one and a half degrees above pre-industrial levels without rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
The UN secretary-general said the report is a “code-red” for humanity, with scientists now warning of more inevitable extreme weather events. This report comes prior to November’s Glasgow Climate summit, where Australia will face further pressure to commit to net zero emissions by 2050. Speaking in Parliament ahead of its release Prime Minister Scott Morrison reaffirmed his “technology not taxes” approach.
