The hard work needed to reduce emissions in line with Labor’s policy has only just begun, the government says.

The passage of legislation for Labor’s climate change target to reduce emissions by 43 per cent was only the beginning, Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen has cautioned, with theby 89 votes to 55, Mr Bowen said, “the work begins today”.

The mechanism, which will begin operation in 2023-24, will apply to 215 entities that currently emit more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. They will be required to reduce aggregate emissions by 5 million tonnes a year to collectively achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.Each entity, including power stations, large foundries and mines, will have a separate emissions reduction trajectory to be negotiated with the Clean Energy Regulator.

The energy and climate change program director at the Grattan Institute, Tony Wood, said the challenge was formidable. Labor’s climate target legislation passed the lower house with the backing of the Greens and the 12 independents after they received some small concessions.Moderate Liberal MP Bridget Archer crossed the floor to support the bill as well. Its passage through the Senate is all but assured when parliament resumes on September 5.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged the Coalition to fall in with business and the rest of the parliament.
