With All-Stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George healthy and a full season of an invested Russell Westbrook, can the Clippers emerge from a deep Western Conference and play for their first NBA title?
Can Russell Westbrook, left, Paul George, center, and Kawhi Leonard, right, lead the Clippers through a deep Western Conference and into the NBA Finals? It certainly seems possible … if they can stay healthy. PLAYA VISTA — The Clippers didn’t even get to the opening tipoff before the unthinkable happened. One of their key players, a young guard who was being counted on for his enthusiasm and scoring, lay on the court grabbing his ankle.
Coach Tyronn Lue wanted assurances this season would be different and decided on a different approach, one that had nothing to do with coaches, trainers or doctors. He looked to a higher authority. Lue said those words before Hyland went down six days before the Clippers were set to open the season. “You’re either going to be hurt or you’re just going to be lucky enough to play games throughout the playoffs or the whole regular season,” Leonard said. “With that being said, if you’re not injured, people play basketball, so nobody is just trying to get to a certain amount of games or – well, at least me. I’m not trying to get to a certain amount of games. I’m trying to play the games that I can play. If I’m hurt, I can’t play basketball.
To avoid a recurrence of last season when George’s season ended prematurely with a right knee sprain, the eight-time All-Star got leaner and meaner. He said it took a couple of months to recover, trust his leg and begin working out.
