Tributes have been left at the front door of St Lucy’s School in northern Sydney as authorities investigate how a 10-year-old student became trapped under a lift.

Shaken neighbours have left tributes at the front door of St Lucy’s School in Wahroonga, as authorities try to work out how a 10-year-old boy became trapped under a lift and died on Wednesday afternoon.

“You never ever expect anything to happen when your kids are at school, it’s just a safe place for them. I think I saw the family here last night, and the level of distress they were going through, it’s just such a tragic accident.” A separate investigation has been launched by SafeWork NSW, with workplace inspectors and lift consultants spending the day at the school.Emergency services were called to the school at about 2pm on Wednesday after staff discovered the boy had been trapped. Attempts were made to free him, but he died at the scene.

Carolina Nodsle came with her son, who attends Knox, to leave flowers after school on Thursday.“We are always here, I always drop off right here, and see the kids coming in and going to school. It’s unbelievable. It hit home, it’s close to home.”In a letter to parents, principal David Raphael said external counselling support would be provided to parents and families.“Thank you for the many messages of support and condolence you have sent.
