Supercars: The Supercars street party has descended on Hobart ahead of the Tasmania Supersprint.
This weekend’s Tasmania SuperSprint is the final round before the critical endurance double-header in Sandown and Bathurst.
But taking so many points off each other at the start of the season has left both drivers vulnerable to the improving Chaz Mostert. “Obviously they have caught up,” Brown tells Fox Sports. “They’re beating us over the last two rounds, so we’ve got to look at that.On paper returning to Tasmania comes at the perfect time for Triple Eight.Since 2007 it’s won at least one race at this track every year bar 2013.Last year it won just once in Tassie, but Brown won the other two races.
“Obviously Chaz has been really strong in the last couple,” he said. “But there’s still a long way to go. “We’re just learning what we should’ve done better in the last couple of rounds and getting a few more tools in our toolbox,” he said. “Obviously we had such a good strong start of the year, but then we went to those two tracks in the middle and sort of struggled and could really get on top of it.“We’re taking pretty seriously because it’s such a big day, and we really need it to get back on the front foot.
Cam Waters already has five poles for the season to go with his two victories, one of which came via that superb scrap with Mostert on Saturday in Townsville, which he backed up with a runner-up finish behind Matt Payne the following day. “We finished last year quite strong, but they changed the aero in the off-season. I think a couple of little things influenced us, being a little bit rocky at the start of the year, up and down.
“I think we’ve learnt a lot as a team since then,” Randle said, pointing to good results at the historically tricky Sydney Motorsport Park as evidence. The Supercars will miss what has been a warm week in the south of the country. Friday will be the warmest day, at a forecast 16 degrees, with the mercury dropping to 14 on Saturday and just 12 on Sunday, though at least the sun is predicted to show its face on the final day of racing.
The weather will put a particular emphasis on qualifying, when preparing the tyres for a single lap — while also making space in traffic — will be critical.
