The driver of a Toyota RAV4 involved in a catastrophic crash that killed four people — including a mother and daughter — made a “conscious decision” to travel on the wrong side of a major Perth highway moments before they slammed into a taxi, police believe. Emergency services were confronted with “almost the most horrific incident you could attend as a police officer in a road crash scenario” when they raced to the scene on Leach Hwy near Abernethy Rd in Cloverdale about 3.40am.
Although the memory card taken from the dashcam was “damaged”, police were able to retrieve “a few files” that could prove vital to their investigation. One of those, Le Tessier said, showed the driver turning up an off-ramp before heading northeast along Leach Hwy in the southwest-bound lanes. Until that point the driver had been travelling on the correct side of the road, although they had been speeding, according to police.
