Former Australian coach Justin Langer will commentate for Seven this summer alongside his close friend RickyPonting. | danbrettig
Former Australian coach Justin Langer will cast a critical eye on the national team this summer after reaching terms to commentate for Seven alongside his close friend Ricky Ponting.that Langer would be in the commentary box this season, a role he has not previously tried after spending more than 30 years continuously playing or coaching.
In accepting the option of commentary, Langer has pivoted away from coaching roles that were widely speculated to be his to choose after his acrimonious Australian team exit in February. Next, Langer was linked strongly to the job of Hobart Hurricanes head coach, as part of a joint ticket with Ponting. When he was confirmed as head of strategy for the club, Ponting said he was eager to get Langer involved, but admitted last week when instead naming Jeff Vaughan as coach that his former Test teammate had demurred.
“The initial conversations were pretty exciting. And he would like to get back involved again. But as things progressed and things got a little bit closer, I think he’s had some other opportunities and exciting things maybe come across his desk that he thinks he might be able to enjoy a little bit more through the course of the summer.“I’m sure you’ll find out about some of those things over the next little period of time. I’m not hiding from the fact that I spoke to him [Langer].
