AFL: On the Couch analyst Nathan Buckley says the AFL must make changes to the handling of concussion after a weekend where clubs hesitated to take off players.
Essendon coach Brad Scott has renewed his push to abolish the sub adamant it would ease as much pressure on club doctors as a move to ban on-field concussion tests .
Scott said the move made “a lot of sense” but scrapping the sub rule would help alleviate even more pressure on doctors.Essendon coach Brad Scott says scrapping the sub rule would ease pressure on club doctors like in Jye Caldwell’s situation against Adelaide on Friday night. Picture: Mark StewartEssendon midfielder Jye Caldwell was subbed out of Friday night’s clash against Adelaide after suffering a head knock late in the final quarter.
“The frustration is we want to give the doctors the best environment to assess players, and that is off the field for sure, but there’s a game going on at the same time and in a lot of cases, if you haven’t activated your sub you’ve got a fresh player sitting there that you can’t put on unless you’re willing to rule the player who’s being assessed out,” Scott said.
“Have five on the bench, and then clubs don’t get disadvantaged. Pressure is off the doctors, they can take the time to make the assessment, and then you’re not making these decisions on subbing players in or out.”
