Thomas Downes, 61, of Jersey City is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact.
in Toms River last month touched the 15-year-old’s buttocks as she stood in line to get a sticker to participate in the event, according to authorities.
The 15-year-old girl was not a member of the team Downes was coaching, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in support of the charges. The girl told investigators that after being touched, she ran in her assigned events and took a picture of Downes before reporting the incident to her coach, authorities said.
During an interview with investigators on Feb. 23, Downes said he remembered “bumping into the girl by accident,” according to the affidavit of probable cause. He also said “he sometimes rubs his hand against a person’s butt in order to ‘get some affection,’” according authorities.
