A coal mine south of Sydney seeking approval to expand is being investigated by regulators for a recent pollution spill into a nearby river that feeds popular water holes used for swimming
The Tahmoor Colliery, owned by “green steel” investor Sanjeev Gupta, is hoping to extend its life beyond the closure date of 2022 to 2035, maintaining a workforce of about 600 staff.
Nitrogen - likely sourced from the mine's sewage, but not identified as a pollutant in the mine's operating licence - were also triple the levels likely to spur excessive algae growth and harm river ecosystems, Dr Wright said. "Following this discharge, and in discussion with the EPA, Tahmoor Colliery has made changes to its water treatment and monitoring systems to improve the quality of waters discharged," an EPA spokesman said.
