Converting Australia’s coal-fired electricity plants to gas would make more sense than trying to keep them going, and could help Australia’s faltering energy transition.

Dr Dylan McConnell, a senior research associate at the University of NSW, says the National Electricity Market is installing barely half the 16 TWh a year the Australian Energy Market Operator projects is required to meet the 82 per cent target. Each year’s shortfall must be made up in later years.

All gas is not created equal. Emissions can also be released during production, depending on the CO2 content of the in-situ gas reserves. Fortunately, Australia is blessed with some of the cleanest gas in the world.

But the Northern Land Council, which is working with local native title groups to set up a regional decision-making entity and to ensure proper consultation and consents and that traditional owners are listened to, has said this organisation isn’t an appropriately representative corporation. Project owners have, in fact, been engaging with the NLC and traditional owners through all phases of the project.
