Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has blamed the Albanese government for “not doing enough” to negotiate tariff exemptions from the US Trump administration.
The opposition has blamed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for failing to secure tariff exemptions from US President Donald Trump , saying he should have flown to Washington DC for a “face-to-face” meeting.
Mr Albanese recently held a phone call with President Trump, in which the leaders agreed to “consider” an exemption, before the White House imposed one anyway. “All of the other leaders of the Quad and AUKUS, Japan, India, the UK, travelled to the US and they had face-to-face meetings,” Ms Ley told Sky News.“We would expect a Prime Minister of Australia to advocate just as fiercely in our national interest to travel to the US to have those face-to-face meetings.”
The tariffs will take effect at 3pm AEDT Wednesday, March 12, despite ongoing efforts by the Australian government to secure an exemption. “It’s been two months and still no visit, no face-to-face meeting, no advocacy that we would expect.”
