The Coalition will be forced to confront internal divisions over its contentious religious discrimination bill, as it tries to ram the legislation through this week to protect a promise taken to the last election.
In a bid to get moderate backing, Prime Minister Scott Morrison's promised to ban schools from expelling students on the basis of their sexuality by amending the separate Sex Discrimination Act.
She said reaching a consensus on the bill was challenging, given different sections of the Coalition want very different things. "There's no doubt that there are very strong emotions on both sides and trying to navigate that and getting the balance right is a very difficult thing to do." "This bill is about protecting those who have religious belief and religious faith and for people who hold religion seriously, then they need to be able to have a freedom around expressing that," she said.
