Liberal frontbencher Simon Birmingham has pledged the Coalition would reverse the federal government's 'stubborn' refusal to reopen Australia's embassy in Kyiv, following the lead of numerous nations who have returned their diplomats to war-torn Ukraine.

Shortly after the brutal invasion began in February 2022, the Albanese government ordered Australian embassy staff to evacuate the capital Kyiv and relocate to "temporary" offices in neighbouring Poland because of the "increased risk". "A Coalition government would work with international partners, particularly Canada, to safely reopen Australia's embassy in Kyiv as soon as possible," Senator Birmingham said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has consistently argued the "unpredictable" and "difficult" security situation in Ukraine makes it too dangerous to base Australian staff in Kyiv, despite other nations doing so. In April, Australia's new ambassador to Ukraine Paul Lehmann was able to travel to Kyiv to present his credentials to President Zelenskyy, four months after officially beginning the role, but then had to return to his rented office in the Polish capital.
