Shadow immigration minister Dan Tehan has criticised the government for issuing tourist visas, rather than humanitarian visas or the like, to Palestinians fleeing war-torn Gaza.

Dan Tehan has hit out at Labor for issuing tourist visa s to Palestinians fleeing war-torn Gaza , describing the visa type as"entirely inappropriate" for the cohort, many of whom have recently applied for asylum.

Speaking to Sky News Australia on Tuesday, Mr Tehan said the figures showed Labor had made a “mess” of immigration. “That of course raised serious issues about the security checks which were being undertaken and now we have this situation where they have come here and over 70 per cent of them have now claimed for asylum.

Also described as a “safe emergency visa” pathway, the measure would facilitate the “secure entry of individuals and families fleeing persecution, violence, and human rights violations, while providing clear policy guidance and acknowledging the challenges of leaving crisis zones", according to a letter from the Council's CEO Paul Power to then immigration minister Andrew Giles in June.
