Ranked No. 143 in world, San Diego native trying to get back to better ranking after injuries
CoCo Vandeweghe pumped a fist in the air and let out a loud: “YES” after capping her round of 32 win over Sofia Kenin by ripping off four straight points to break Kenin’s serve.
After using a strong serve and powerful groundstrokes to cruise in the opening set, Vandeweghe missed some makeable shots in the second and Kenin gained confidence. Vandeweghe, who is ranked 143 in the world, defeated Pegula 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the round of 16 of the Credit One Charleston Open in April, a victory that showed the tennis world that she was well on her way back from a string of injuries that bothered her starting in 2019.
“It feels like it’s been forever since I felt completely healthy and had full training blocks under my belt,” Vandeweghe said. “Thankfully, I’m getting a chance to showcase it and get back to doing what I love, which is to compete on the tennis court. It feels good.”American and world No. 18 Madison Keys rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ellen Perez.
