Heavy rain heading for NSW on Wednesday afternoon - bringing with it the risk of dangerous river rises and flash flooding - is set to push Sydney to within just 100mm of its wettest year on record.
On Tuesday night a rain band, fuelled by a low pressure system and trough, brought heavy rain to towns in the Sunraysia region encompassing Victoria's far north-western border with South Australia and NSW.
Renmark’s overnight total of 34mm is the wettest day for the town in more than eight years, while over the border in Mildura 22mm fell – the heaviest deluge in eight months.By Wednesday afternoon, heavy falls reached the NSW Central West - where the flash flood risk stretches from Coonamble to Forbes – right on top of the already flooded Macquarie and Lachlan rivers. Warnings are in place for renewed major flooding for these rivers, with the flood threat heading east with the rain overnight. The first raindrops reached southeast Queensland just after noon and the NSW east coast can expect the rain to arrive by the evening, settling in for a wet and windy public holiday. The low and trough, while weakening, will stall just off the eastern seaboard until the end of the week, which means two days of persistent grey sky, showers and storms into the weekend.
