Coles and Woolworths have offered to take responsibility for more than 12,000 tonnes of soft plastics stockpiled by the failed REDcycle recycling program.
The rescue plan will not see recycling of the materials restart, but includes an offer by the supermarket giants to assume control of the 32 stockpiles in NSW, Victoria and South Australia that are deemed to pose a potential threat to the environment and human health. The supermarkets’ offer has come with a major caveat that allows them to dump the stockpiles in landfill under certain conditions.
The offer does not include paying for any of REDcycle’s past debts or acquiring the company itself. It only relates to the future management of the stockpiles. Coles and Woolworths spent more than $20 million paying for the REDcycle program over the past decade, according to the media statement. This includes the option of temporarily storing the materials inside sealed shipping containers at a “lawful” facility.
