Supermarket giant Coles has announced it will stop selling reusable plastic shopping bags in its stores by the end of next month.

The supermarket chain announced the change on Wednesday and confirmed supplies of the plastic bags would dwindle at checkouts over coming weeks and sales would cease by July.

“The most sustainable option is to bring your own reusable bag to the supermarket, but for those who forget, we will continue to sell 100 per cent recycled paper bags that can be recycled kerbside, as well as other reusable options,” he said. Another 2500 tonnes of waste will be moved to a recycling facility in Sydney’s west, where it will be stored until a process can be found to recycle the material as part of a rescue plan by supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths.

Woolworths director of stores Jeanette Fenske said in April that eight in 10 customers at the supermarket already brought their own bags when they shopped.
