Sea Lions first baseman has homered in seven straight games, two shy of NCAA record; USD gets third straight victory over Nebraska with Sunday's walkoff win

Jakob Christian homered 13 times last season for Point Loma Nazarene, so no one is surprised when the sophomore first baseman hits a ball over the fence.Christian has homered in seven straight games, two shy of the NCAA Division II record set in 2011 by Chase Larsson for Oklahoma’s Cameron University. Nine straight games also is the Division I mark, set two years ago by Nevada’s Tyler Bosetti. The major league record is eight straight games, shared by the Mariners’ Ken Griffey Jr.

Christian’s streak began two weeks ago with a solo homer to left field against Northwest Nazarene at PLNU’s picturesque Carroll B. Land Stadium. “I didn’t really notice until the sixth game ,” said Christian, a St. Augustine High School grad. “I saw it get posted and I’m like, ‘Dang, that’s pretty cool.’

It made little difference in PLNU’s lopsided 20-4 loss. The Sea Lions split the first two games of the series at home with Friday’s 7-3 win and 4-3 loss.
