The Minnesota Golden Gophers football team is 8-0. If that’s a foreign phrase, it’s because the last time it happened was before Pearl Harbor.

Enter P.J. Fleck, the third-year, 38-year-old coach who sprints the sideline before games and takes a flying leap into a mosh pit of players in the locker room after them. But Mackay, who helped land Lou Holtz as Minnesota coach for two seasons in the 1980s before Holtz bolted to Notre Dame, is sold on the creative leadership of Fleck—not least because he led lowly Western Michigan to a 13-1 record in 2016.
“I didn’t think was going to happen just because of past history of the team,” said Darrell Thompson, a record-setting running back for the Gophers in the late ‘80s who does radio color commentary for Minnesota football games. “Think about the Vikings and other teams that have struggled here in the Twin Cities. People are just a little bit disappointed by some of those types of teams and they’re hesitant to jump on the bandwagon.
