Residents in the remote Northern Territory town of Elliott say they are at their wit's end, as bats roosting on power lines cause recurring outages.
Residents in the remote NT town of Elliott say they're fed up with regular power outages caused by fruit bats roosting on powerlines.
Mudburra elder Harold Dalywaters said frustration was growing among residents in Elliott, where power had been cutting out intermittently for at least a fortnight."We have late nights and restless sleeps because of this thing.Temperatures in the outback town of Elliott, about halfway between Darwin and Alice Springs, have reached 40 degrees Celsius in recent weeks.
He also said it was hard to buy food from the general store, because staff could only accept cash during the outages.Utility company Power and Water said it was aware of the issue, which was caused by fruit bats roosting together on powerlines and sometimes electrocuting themselves. But if that doesn't happen, Power and Water crews have to find and remove the fruit bats before power can be restored.
