Denise Crosby writes: 'After watching 'Adapting to Dive' a few nights ago, Barb Mabbs does indeed stand out among a memorable cast in a remarkable film.'

Barb Mabbs of Batavia was featured in a recently released documentary on Amazon Prime called"Adapting to Dive," which explores the benefits of scuba diving for those who are disabled. It was shot through the lens of filmmaker David Marsh, who was struggling with his own challenges in life.Even a cursory glance at what she’s accomplished in her 67 years, the vast majority of it in a wheelchair, certainly is worthy of applause.

How? By learning to connect with, and trust, one another the same way these disabled divers come to rely on their water buddies. He and Diveheart Executive Director Tinamarie Hernandez were at the Mexican resort doing some prep work for that trip when they happened to meet David Marsh, a filmmaker from Arizona who was on a diving vacation to try and deal with depression and a sense of failure from bankruptcy, a divorce and his beloved son’s ongoing battle with addiction.Intrigued by Diveheart’s mission, he and Elliott discussed the possibility of turning it into a documentary.

Marsh told no one about the death of his son. And it’s here that the film takes on a new direction, focusing not so much on the individual stories of the adaptive divers but on how they and their diving partners taught this grieving dad some valuable lessons on coping with life’s really tough hurdles.

When the group goes out on the boats in the morning, “we are all people with disabilities,” she added. “But when we come back, we are all divers with shared experiences.”
