The 37-year-old veteran homers, doubles twice and drives in five as team captures series against Diamondbacks
This is why baseball teams that seem loaded to the gills pick up veteran bat-toters like Matt Carpenter. He’s not a sexy headliner, like Fernando Tatis Jr. or Manny Machado. He’s not the guy who hears boisterous cheers or boos ambling to the batter’s box.across 1,394 big-league games and nearly 4,600 at-bats.
All of it felt critical for a team hunting a course correction. The Padres won just their second series of the season … on the road … against the NL West leaders … to climb to bubble level at 12-12. Consider the spigot fully opened. Carpenter has recorded seven extra-base hits this season with four in the two most recent games. He’s ripped four doubles, three in the last 18 innings. Six of his 13 RBIs came in the same stretch.
